About the Car

Morgan introduced the Plus 4 in 1950, utilizing a significantly larger engine than they had previously fitted to their 4/4 model, as well as lengthening the car by 4 inches and installing all hydraulic brakes for the first time. Before that point, the UK taxed cars on their displacement so Morgan was reluctant to install a bigger engine, which would mean a higher tax, so they continued to produce the 4/4 in tandem in case the displacement tax returned. The Standard Vanguard engine was the immediate predecessor to that fitted in the Triumph TR2 though the TR4A, being a high torque engine, ideally suited to fast acceleration and thus was an excellent fit for the lightweight Morgan Plus 4 and in 1953, the Plus 4 switched to the Triumph variant for even better performance. This car was purchased, along with two other cars, out of an estate after it was restored for the previous owner in Oregon by Jim Killian. In comparison with the later Morgans, it features an upright, flat radiator grille and carries two spare tires. Performance is still impressive, and the car accelerates and drives very well, but has the typically stiff Morgan suspension. As I don’t currently have a fitted top for it, the car is just a fair weather car for me, which, as it doesn’t have a heater, is perfectly fine. It is still a quick car and certainly capable of long distance touring and excels on windy back roads, but is perfectly manageable around town as well.
